This bronze sculpture of Governor Lachlan Macquarie stands on the edge of Hyde Park along St James Road, facing towards Macquarie Street which was named in his honour. It was created by Terrance Plowright and unveiled in 2013, to celebrate the 225th anniversary of the founding of Sydney.
Macquarie seemed to be a very humane bloke, I think. Too military and too religious for some, but well motivated to restore dignity to convicts as soon as they got their ticket of leave.
ReplyDeleteInteresting character. The fashion of his outfit is very military...big boots! ;-)
