The Rocks, Susannah Place Museum

The entrance to the Susannah Place Museum is down the stairs from Gloucester Street and along the Cumberland Place laneway at The Rocks. Susannah Place is a terrace of four houses built by Irish immigrants in 1844 and includes a recreated corner shop whose window can be seen here. The heritage listed museum allows visitors to experience how families lived, worked and played in the past.

  6. I'd like to tour there too! What a time that was for the Irish - and what a long journey to Sydney it must have been.

  7. The Museum page says "the stories inside could belong to anyone, in any part of the world". Yes indeed. My own granny grew up in the East End of London, with 10 children and 3 adults in a two room slum. The toilet and washing facilities, shared with three other families, was on the other side of the lane.

  8. I always loved visiting the Rrocks area of Sydney and in fact on one visit, that where I took my family for a farewell meal.
