Ultimo, Broadway

These commercial buildings are located along Broadway, in the inner city suburb of Ultimo. The two buildings are both two storey Federation Free architectural style commercial buildings built around 1910. The one on the left is more ornate and originally housed a billiards saloon and refreshment rooms, later becoming a confectioners. The one on the right originally housed a grocery shop and from 1916 became part of Hoskings department store. They were redeveloped in 2002 as part of the Quadrant on Brooadway apartments and now house restaurants and a health food shop.

  1. Lovely shapes and designs on the building!

  2. The one on the left could easily lose its swags and still look smart.

  3. Time really changes things. Still neat buildings.

  4. love the look of the older buildings, you can see the new construction behind. older ones have much more character.

    1. Yes, you can't see people marvelling at those new buildings in a hundred years from now.

  5. And are we surprised that the billiards hall is more ornate than the grocery store?!
