This is one of four murals that have been painted on the underpass of the Cahill Expressway where it crosses Harrington Street, at The Rocks. The award winning murals were created by Geoff Williams in 2011, depicting the city as it was in the past. "Spying on the Colony 1793" shows a panting by Italian Ferdinand Brambila who in 1793 joined a scientific and spying expedition by King Juan Carlos IV of Spain and led by Alessandro Malaspina to report on the English colony in Sydney. The view shows the three Spanish ships anchored off Bennelong Point and Bridge Street leading up to the Governor's residence. The three shops in the bottom left corner stood at the corner of what became the intersection of George Street and Grosvenor Street.
This really is a fabulous mural Jim, it looks incredible in monochrome tones. I like the contrast between then and now.. the motorbikes ☺
ReplyDeleteWow! It's good to have an artist as a spy

A shame that it is hidden under an underpass. Very pretty.
