Sydney Olympic Park, The Millennium Athlete

This steel sculpture of “The Millennium Athlete” logo for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games is located along Dawn Fraser Avenue, in the western suburb of Sydney Olympic Park. Yesterday, Sydney celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympic Games, which opened on the 15 September 2000, by relighting The Cauldron now a sculpture in Cathy Freeman Park. The sculpture was unveiled on 14 September 1996 at Darling Harbour, which was the other major site of Olympic venues. It was relocated to Homebush Bay during the redevelopment of Darling Harbour, which resulted in the demolition of the Convention, Exhibition and Entertainment Centres.

  2. Interesting. I wonder if the artist deliberately made the legs look like a boomerang.

  5. Most interesting. Besides the boomerang legs, I wonder what other symbolism it contains.

    1. Alana, it has boomerang arms too and a suggestion of the sun in the head. The flame being carried is in the shape of the Sydney Opera House, which is also reflected in the legs. The logo was in blue for the ocean, yellow for the sun and red for the desert in Australia.
