Kurnell, Captain Cook's Landing Place

This obelisk marks Captain Cook's Landing Place in the Kamay Botany Bay National Park, in the southern suburb of Kurnell. Captain James Cook was an English explorer, navigator and cartographer whose expedition was the first recorded European one to navigate and map the eastern coastline of Australia. On the 29th of April 1770, his crew arrived in Botany Bay on the Endeavour and made their first landing on Australian soil. This monument was dedicated in 1870 to commemorate the centenary.

Coogee, beach sign

Looking across Coogee Beach to Coogee Bay and the Pacific Ocean, in the eastern suburb of Coogee. The sign declares that the beach is closed to swimmers due to dangerous conditions. Two lifeguard surfboards sit on either side, in case of emergency. It's officially winter now so you're not going to see many swimmers at the beach anyway.

Coogee, tidal pool

Looking down at the Ross Jones Memorial Pool, next to the Surf Life Saving Club, from the upper promenade at Coogee Beach, in the eastern suburb of Coogee. Those standing in the tidal pool and one about to walk down the stairs are rugby league footballers. The State of Origin series is an annual best-of-three rugby league series between two Australian state representative sides, the New South Wales Blues and the Queensland Maroons. This photo was taken on Monday when these players from the NSW Blues were revealed for the upcoming series. Their two watchful minders keep an eye on the rough waves washing in.

Mascot, Sydney Airport (Theme Day: When I Can Travel Again)

The Sydney International Airport Departure Plaza, in the eastern suburb of Mascot. This area is used to drop passengers off at the Departures level of the T1 International Terminal. Normally, this area would be buzzing with cars, taxis and buses throughout the day but at the moment there are many times when it is completely deserted. Travellers are waiting to return here to travel overseas again.

Sans Souci, war memorial

 This war memorial is located in Pemberton Reserve, in the southern suburb of Sans Souci. The marble statue of an Australian soldier was originally dedicated on 24 August 1919 atop an elaborate monument at the Wolli Creek Tram Depot in Tempe. In 1970, it was given to the Kyeemagh RSL Club and painted to cover damage inflicted by vandals. In 2002, the paint was removed to reveal its original appearance and the statue was restored. It was mounted on the sandstone pedestal which features a decorative plaque with a laurel wreath surrounding an eternal flame and the inscribed words 'Lest We Forget, For the Fallen'. Following the closure of the club, the Ramsgate RSL Club became its custodian and in 2021 relocated it to the adjoining park.

The Ocean Safety and Lifesaving Headquarters is located at Wanda Beach, in the southern suburb of Cronulla.

Kurnell, Alpha House

 'Alpha House' is located along Cape Solander Drive, in the southern suburb of Kurnell. The first Alpha House was built in 1815, when seven hundred acres were acquired by James Birnie to establish 'Alpha Farm'. John Connell built a new stone cottage on the foundations in 1828, retaining the underground cool rooms. By the 1890s it was abandoned and in 1902 this heritage listed timber guesthouse was built on the site.

Kurnell, sculpture

  Looking across Botany Bay to Port Botany and La Perouse from the southern suburb of Kurnell.  This large bronze sculpture on the shore is 'The Eyes of the Land and the Sea', designed by Alison Page and Nik Lachacjzak. It is one of the three sculptures installed in 2020 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the encounter between Aboriginal Australians and the crew of the HMB Endeavour, commanded by James Cook. It is described as an ‘abstraction of the ribs of the HMB Endeavour and the bones of the Gweagal totem the whale’.

Bronte, Waverley Cemetery

 Waverley Cemetery overlooks the Pacific Ocean, in the eastern suburb of Bronte. The first interment at this heritage listed cemetery took place in 1877.

Bronte Baths are located at the southern end of Bronte Beach, in the eastern suburb of Bronte. We're nearly at the end of Autumn and the temperatures have cooled so you're not seeing many swimmers now.

Mortdale, railway station

The entrance to Mortdale railway station at the end of Morts Road near the corner of Cook Lane, in the southern suburb of Mortdale. The original station opened in 1897 but was relocated further north in 1922, when a new deviation of the line opened. It is served by Sydney Trains T4 line services on the Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line. The lifts from the street to the concourse and down to the platforms were installed in 2007.

Bronte, sculpture

This sculpture is located in Calga Reserve at Lookout Point in the eastern suburb of Bronte. 'Twice Twisted Bands' was created by Keizo Ushio in 2012 and was originally displayed at the Sculpture By The Sea exhibition.

Rockdale, Uniting Church

 
The former Rockdale Methodist Church is located along Bay Street, in the southern suburb of Rockdale. This heritage listed sandstone church was built in 1871, in the Victorian Gothic style. This original chapel was built on this site in 1858 and later extended became the school and church hall. The Methodist Church became part of the Uniting Church in 1977.

Kurnell, viewing platform

This former wharf is now a viewing platform on the shore of Botany Bay, in the southern suburb of Kurnell. A passenger ferry service operated between Kurnell and La Perouse from 1890 to 1974. Ferry services ceased following severe damage to both wharves after a major storm event.

Sans Souci, Endeavour Street Reserve

This anchor monument is located in Endeavour Street Reserve on the shore of the Georges River, near the Botany Bay Yacht Club, in the southern suburb of Sans Souci. The plaque reads that the anchor was found in Botany Bay and donated to the reserve by a fisherman in May 1973.

Rockdale, chapel

The former Rockdale Methodist Church along Bay Street, in the southern suburb of Rockdale. This heritage listed chapel was built in 1858 in the Victorian Gothic style and later extended. When a new church was built in 1871, this building became the school and church hall. The Methodist Church became part of the Uniting Church in 1977.

Sydney Olympic Park, In The Shadows

'In The Shadows' is an artwork created by Janet Laurence in 2000 which is located in a creek, in the western suburb of Sydney Olympic Park. This environmental art work creates an atmospheric zone through which one passes over bridges. It is made of twenty one vertical transparent wands, echoing scientific measuring instruments, standing at various heights within the creek. At varying intervals, water blurps and aerates randomly, atmospheric vaporous fog moves, rises and dissipates transforming and cooling the creek environment.

Sydney Olympic Park, bench

 This bench sits between the Wangal Walk and the Parramatta River, in the western suburb of Sydney Olympic Park. Wangal Walk is a walkway and cycleway. Wanngal Wetland and Newington Nature Reserve are behind the fence.

Sydney Olympic Park, Quay Centre

 Quay Centre, formerly the State Sports Centre, is located along Olympic Boulevarde in the western suburb of Sydney Olympic Park. It was known as the Basketball Centre during the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics and is now used for basketball, netball and gymnastics.

This artwork is at a car park entrance of Marrickville Metro shopping centre, in the inner west suburb of Marrickville. A number of these flower murals in this location were painted in 2018 by Andrew Dennis from Studio Dennis.

Rockdale, manse

The manse or parsonage for the former Rockdale Methodist Church along Bay Street, in the southern suburb of Rockdale. The original chapel on this site was built in 1858, the church in 1871 and the manse in 1887. They became part of the Uniting Church in 1977.

Kyeemagh, market gardens (Theme Day: Earth)

The Kyeemagh Market Gardens are located on the corner of Bestic Street and Occupation Road, in the southern suburb of Kyeemagh. This heritage listed area is believed to have been occupied by market gardeners since 1892. From the 1950s, the gardeners were Italian and Maltese and since the 1980s have been Chinese market gardeners.

Clovelly Surf Life Saving Club is located in Bundook Park along Donnellan Circuit, in the eastern suburb of Clovelly.

Maroubra Beach

A lifeguard beach buggy has stopped between the warning signs at Maroubra Beach, in the eastern suburb of Maroubra. The patrolled area for swimmers is between the red and yellow flags and surf craft are prohibited from this area.

 A surfer runs along the northern end of Maroubra Beach, in the eastern suburb of Maroubra. The Big Rubik's Cube was originally a plain concrete block serving as a stormwater drain cover but in 2008 was painted by local artists overnight.

Botany, war memorial

The Botany War Memorial is located in Boralee Park, on the corner of Bay Street and Daniel Street, in the eastern suburb of Botany. It was unveiled in 1923 and features a luted granite column surmounted by a sphere and crown, resting on a sandstone and granite base on steps. Today is ANZAC Day, which commemorates the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War in 1915.
