Bondi, The Stick Man

'The Stick Man' is a sculpture created by Paul Milman in 1999. It is located in Hunter Park, a sculpture park in the eastern suburb of Bondi, overlooking Bondi Bay. There are a couple of stumps behind it and I'm not sure why they chopped down those two trees but the Pacific Ocean does make a better backdrop now, as do the yellow flowers currently in bloom low to the ground.

North Bondi, sewer vent

This sewer vent in the middle of a golf course, dominates the skyline in the eastern suburb of North Bondi. It was built at the end of the 19th century for the Bondi Ocean Outfall Sewer. By the late 1800s, the five outfall sewers which drained into Sydney Harbour had grossly polluted it. As replacements, the Southern Outfall Sewer was constructed in 1886 including an experimental sewage farm, followed by the Bondi Ocean Outfall Sewer in 1889 and the Western Suburbs Outfall Sewer in 1898. Sewer vents introduce a flow of fresh air through sewers to reduce the production of noxious and corrosive gases by enabling their release. The similar vent for the Southern Outfall Sewer can be seen here.

The nearby coastal walkway hosts the annual Sculpture by the Sea, a temporary art exhibition between Bondi and Tamarama but this artwork is a permanent fixture in this sculpture park.

Martin Place, menorah

This large Chanukah menorah was located behind these small fountains in the Martin Place pedestrian mall last week. Chanukah celebrates the rededication of the Temple after the successful Jewish revolt against the Seleucid monarchy. The nine-branched candelabrum lit during the eight-day holiday of Chanukah (or Hanukkah) is different from the seven-branched candelabrum used in the Temple, a traditional symbol of the Jewish faith. The middle branch, which sits higher than the others, traditionally holds the shamash which is used to light the other candles on each night of Chanukah. A new light was lit here on each night from December 1 to December 9 and they remained lit until the weekend. Martin Place also features a giant Christmas tree at the other end of the pedestrian mall, along with Christmas decorations and banners along the length of it.
