Sydney Olympic Park, Abattoir Heritage Precinct

The Abattoir Heritage Precinct is located along Herb Elliott Avenue at Sydney Olympic Park, in the western suburb of Homebush Bay. These administrative buildings were part of the State Abattoirs, dating from 1915. They were redeveloped for the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games for use by the Sydney Olympic Park Authority and visitor services. They are currently used for various sporting administration offices, visitor information and a café.

  4. Yes Lee, that's exactly what it was. They opened in 1913 and ceased operations in 1988. With the abbatoirs and brickworks also closing at Homebush Bay that year, the site was available for redevelopment. Since it was only 16 kilometres from the centre of the city, it was an ideal location for the Olympic site in 2000.
