Seven Shillings Beach sits along the shore of Blackburn Cove on Sydney Harbour, in the eastern suburb of Point Piper. Blackburn Gardens is a heritage garden that sits behind the wall of the sandy beach, adjoining Woollahra Library. Access to the beach is from the adjoining Redleaf Pool. This beach is named after the seven shillings paid to Gurrah, a local Aboriginal man who sold his fishing rights here to William Busby in the 1800s.
I wonder who is hiding behind that blue umbrella?
ReplyDeleteIt looks so nice and quiet!
ReplyDeleteOh, you're just teasing me with those views.
ReplyDeleteSeems to be a nice, not so crowded beach = perfect. Lovely blu water and sky!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog. So what's the story? While we gear up for summer coming in a few weeks are you gearing up for winter coming in a few weeks. After allthe snow we had this winter I don't want to hear that W word for a long long time.
ReplyDeleteJack and Joann, that's right. While you're in Spring heading into Summer, we're in Autumn heading into Winter. Luckily, we don't have do deal with the snow in Sydney (or most of Australia actually).
ReplyDeleteThat's good to see. It seems like a 100 years since I was there.
ReplyDeletePriceless beach to be. How impressive to see that a big city is able to provide such a wonderful scenery. Please have a nice Wednesday.

Thats a funny name. Do you know the history behind it?
ReplyDeleteDiane, it certainly is a peculiar name. I did a bit of research and it seems the name came from the price of the fishing rights on the beach sold by an Aboriginal to a local, in the 1800s. I'll add the info to the post.

This brings back memories for me Jim.
ReplyDeleteYears ago I flatted in an old brick apartment building called 'Buckhurst' and we had a key to Seven Shillings beach.
In those days it was a private beach!!
You must have taken this photo from a boat on the harbour!
Shane
Shane, it was taken from the boardwalk around Redleaf Pool.
