The Redfern Court House is located in Redfern Street, in the inner city suburb of Redfern. This heritage listed sandstone building was constructed in 1898 and used as a local court until 2008. It was designed by Walter Liberty Vernon, the first New South Wales Government Architect, in the Federation Free Classical style.
Such a beautiful building.
ReplyDeleteI know redfern is a bit of a tough area, but I am assuming it was once quite refined. This is a very refined building. Is it still used as a court house?
ReplyDeleteGood to see, where are all the people?
ReplyDeleteThat's a lovely old building.
ReplyDeleteHels, it is a bit of a tough area. I'm sure it was very refined at some stage because there are some fine buildings here from the past. Redfern is undergoing gentrification, so the character of the area slowly changing again. I believe the local court ceased operating here in 2008.
ReplyDeleteBruce, that's my little quirk. I wait around until there are no people or few people in my shots.
The Sydney sandstone has that unique orange tinge. A beautiful old building.
ReplyDeleteLooks antique and unique?

ReplyDeleteGreat photos
ReplyDeleteHi, Great photo. From the early days this courthouse had two beautiful sandstone lions on the gate pillars. In the early 1980's the Public Works Dept. took them and replaced them with diminutive sandstone plinths and later the lights shown in the photo. Does anyone know who got the lions and where they are now? This lionsgate matter is not as big as Watergate but still interesting.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, that's a really interesting fact. I'd really like to know what happened to those lions.
