Potts Point, Woolloomooloo Bay, HMAS Newcastle

The HMAS Newcastle (FFG 06) is an Adelaide class guided-missile frigate of the Royal Australian Navy which is docked at the the Garden Island dockyard, the home port of the naval fleet based on the east coast of Australia. It is named for the city of Newcastle, New South Wales, the largest provincial city in Australia. It was the last ship of the class to be constructed and entered service in 1993. Garden Island is a marine engineering and refit centre for the Royal Australian Navy and Thales Australia with the docks extending along Woolloomooloo Bay from Potts Point to Woolloomooloo. This shot was taken from the Woolloomooloo Finger Wharf on Woollomooloo Bay.

  2. It is difficult to associate Australia with a grand ship like that! Your navy must be in hiding somewhere!

  3. Margaret, I guess it's because Australia is such a small country in terms of population so we often don't get noticed or seem to make a huge impact on the wider world.

  4. Looks like one of our fast frigates. I can't help it; grew up a Navy brat, built subs and aircraft carriers for a few years and worked for the US Navy for 20 odd years.

  7. Great ship! We have one parked in our harbor here also, HMCS Haida. I walk to it lots and snap away. Though they give tours in the summer.

  8. Okay, Jim, tell me honestly, can you read that out loud with a straight face? I'm grinning just reading it. Woolloomooloo. (And please, no disrespect intended; just one of life's natural funnies.) Nice shot of the navy ship.

  9. Leif, I know the navy had an open day a couple of weeks ago, when I took these snaps down around the bay. Next time they have an open day I'm going to go on board.

Francisca, I suppose we're used to hearing Woolloomooloo so much that it doesn't seem that unusual to us any more. I can understand how funny it must seem because it was quite hilarious when first hearing it, as a child.
