This sandstone railway bridge over Hay Street is viewed from Castlereagh Street. It was built as part of the City Circle underground railway line. The first stage was opened in 1926 from Central railway station to Museum and St James stations. The sandstone was recently cleaned and restored.
I though it looked clean saw wasn't surprised it had recently been cleaned - a nice functional design to it.
ReplyDeleteVery handsome, with great lines.
ReplyDeleteMy only concern about sandstone is whether it erodes slowly, over the decades.
It does. It looks like they needed to replace some of the blocks.
DeleteI had no idea that this bridge had so many tones in the brickwork! It always looked dingy and mouldy! What a great job has been done!
ReplyDeleteI like that area around Central with all the sandstone..
ReplyDeletewhat a neat bridge
ReplyDeleteA very nice looking bridge. Much nicer looking than the metal trusses of the bridges around here.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting bridge. Clean as well. Typical OZ, huh?

ReplyDeleteDeep and mysterious are the shadows under the bridge!
