Botany, Sir Joseph Banks Park, sculpture

The Sir Joseph Banks Park is located in the eastern suburb of Botany. The Sir Joseph Banks Zoological and Botanical Gardens were the main attraction of the nearby Sir Joseph Banks Hotel in the 19th Century. The colony's first zoo featured animals such as kangaroos, elephants, tigers, bears camels and gorillas. These animals are commemorated by sculptured life-sized, life-like zoo animals such as this elephant in the children's playground, created in 1988.

  2. Jim,

Those sculptures are incredible! What are they made of? Is that bronze?

They are extremely life like, and really must be something else in real life, wow!

Thanks so much for your visit today!

    1. Not bronze. I think they might be concrete but not sure what they are coated in. It's an impressive paint job or finish.

    1. Better the sculptures of elephants, gorillas and bears, than the real things. :)

  10. Just chatting with my grandad who created and built these sculptures! I’ve read all your comments to him and he is thrilled, also that they have been kept in tip top condition from when he made them back in 1988 we believe - living back in the UK now and still working although nothing as big now! www.WilliamReesArtist.com for his latest work
