The Anzac Memorial stands at the western approach of the Anzac Bridge at Rozelle. The bronze sculpture of an Australian ANZAC soldier (colloquially known as a digger) was created by Alan Somerville and unveiled on ANZAC Day in 2000, with sand collected from Ari Burnu beach in Gallipolli, Turkey placed underneath. He faces west in the "rest on arms reverse" drill position holding a Lee-Enfield rifle. A statue of a New Zealand ANZAC soldier facing east was added to a plinth across the road in 2008. The Australian White Ensign is the navy flag being flown from the bridge this week to commemorate the centenary of the Royal Australian Navy.

ReplyDeleteA fantastic post, Jim. Any student of the histories of the 20th century's two great wars will appreciate this as they will know the tremendous contributions of the ANZAC troops in both conflicts. Churchill is often blamed for the slaughter by the Turks of the ANZAC troops at Gallipoli, but the blame more correctly falls on Admiral Sir Jackie Fisher and other dithering Admirals in the British Admiralty, several of whom set Churchill up as the culprit. Churchill wanted to go all-in, knowing that if they didn't this outcome was likely. He was tragically correct in his assessment. The half-measures the Admiralty took needlessly cost thousands of lives, many of them amongst the brave ANZAC forces.

«Louis» wonders if the graceful lines of the ANZAC bridge were some of the inspiration for the new eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.
