Ashfield, St John the Baptist Anglican Church

This cockatoo stands guard on top of this hollow tree stump, which probably houses its nest, on the grounds of St John the Baptist Anglican Church along Alt Street, in the inner west suburb of Ashfield. The central part of the church building is one of the first Sydney designs by the colonial architect Edmund Blacket and built in 1843. The sandstone section on the left was completed in 1875 and the tower on the right was added in 1901.

  1. Great photo, encompassing a hotch potch of styles and materials. Hashfield was in the news recently. Can't quite remember why. Old house? Demolition?

  2. Very interesting photo, Jim with a variety of subjects. The old church..is it still functioning? So interesting to see a cockatoo in the wild, as we usually see them in cages here in the States..

    1. Yes indeed, it is still functioning. You can find cockatoos anywhere there are trees and sometimes they can be pests.

  3. Even though the tree's long dead, it provides visual interest, and that church looks enduring. The cockatoo's quite a treat to see!

  4. I love seeing these birds out in the 'wild' where they should be. I am always sad when they are kept as pets. Great catch!
