These two landmark buildings along Broadway were originally the flagship buildings of the former Grace Brothers department store. They stand on the border of two inner city suburbs with the original five storey building on the left built in 1904 in Glebe and the matching building on the right completed in 1923 in Ultimo. The stylish Broadway store, which was built in the Federation/Edwardian style of architecture, closed in 1992. The 1904 building became part of The Broadway Shopping Centre, a shopping mall with retail space, cinemas and restaurants. This 1923 building is now UniLodge, student accommodation for the nearby University of Sydney and also contains retail space and restaurants
Truly landmark buildings. They are grand, and the architecture is spectacular.

ReplyDeleteI like this end of town, Jim. Nothing represents it more than this matching pair. I did not realise that there was such a discrepancy in their build-date.
