These two vessels are on permanent display at the Australian National Maritime Museum at Darling Harbour. The Commonwealth Lightship 4 Carpentaria, is a floating unmanned lighthouse that was built in 1917. It was anchored in locations where a permanent light could not be built, until it was retired in 1985. The HMAS Advance is a navy patrol boat that was commissioned in 1968 and served out of Darwin, Northern Territory until 1980.

ReplyDeleteSometimes this gorgeous red vessel is also moored next to the James Craig at Wharf 7. They made such a contrast against the bland white buildings of Darling Harbour in the background. I managed to squeeze both these vessels into a painting (see "A Tall ship and a Lightship" at http://janebennettartist.blogspot.com.au/2011/02/tall-ship-and-lightship.html )

Wonderful photo of the ships. My father has a huge interest in ships of all kinds. I've never seen a floating lighthouse before - and that's very interesting.
