Petersham Railway Station

The former Petersham railway station building is located in Terminus Street in the inner west suburb of Petersham. This heritage listed building, completed in 1885, was designed by George Cowdery in the Victorian Italianate architectural style. It is the only major 'First Class' station building known to have been built in Sydney in the 19th century. The main block features a central tower, sandstone steps onto a veranda, supported on cast iron columns with decorative lacework. The railway platform behind it features an awning supported by cast iron columns with decorative cast iron lace work.

  4. They don't build them like that anymore! You are doing a great job of documenting these landmarks of Sydney.

  5. Mark, that's a good question. It seems to be well maintained but I don't know what it's used for now.

  6. That was going to be my question Jim, if it was built in 1885, it certainly has been well looked after and you know, now you're going to have to find out for us what goes on there haha!

  7. Love all the cast iron lacework. It's such a terrific touch that was added to so many buildings of the same era.

  8. Now that make the little railway station at Capertee that I posted yesterday look VERY humble.

  10. I have seen the station from passing trains many times but have never seen the street view before. It certainly looks impressive.

  11. What a super building! How many other railway stations have decorative cast iron lace work and verandas, especially from 1885.

I don't know the architect George Cowdery but I am certainly starting to know Victorian Italianate very well. What a great choice!

  12. I lived at 67 Railway St Petersham when I was a child and travelled to school in Stanmore every day from that station. In the early years of my marriage I lived at 28 Terminus St Petersham. I had no idea the station was no longer used. I now live in Queensland. Beautiful photograph!

  13. Thanks, Julia. Petersham Railway Station itself is still in use. It's just the heritage building and
one platform that are no longer in use.

  14. Two of my uncles and a cousin were railway people. Love the photos, I worked on Garden Island, do you have any photos of the beautiful old buildings that were on the island?

  15. I haven't had a chance to photograph the buildings there but I do have some photos of Garden Island from a distance. Just do a search on "Garden Island" and you should be able to see them.
