This memorial is located in Green Park, in the inner city suburb of Darlinghurst. The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Holocaust Memorial was designed by Russell Rodrigo and Jennifer Gamble and opened in 2001. In the form of a pink triangle and black poles, it commemorates the gay men and lesbian women who were murdered, tortured or persecuted because of their sexuality, by the Nazis during World War II. The pink triangle was one of the Nazi concentration camp badges, used to identify male prisoners who were sent there because of their homosexuality. Green Park is adjacent to the Sydney Jewish Museum and Darlinghurst is considered the heart of Sydney's gay and lesbian population.

I attended The Gay Parade in Toronto in July, to support their right. :)
ReplyDeleteNice photo with shadows.
happy weekend.
it is sad that a memorial had to be built...so much hatred in this world...
ReplyDeletegreat shadow shot tho. thanks for sharing.
I agree with Robin, so sad and so much hatred in the world -- our world! Terrific capture, Jim, thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYes, it sad that we humans have the ability to hate to that extent. Incomprehensible as it is. Thanks for educating me on this-I did not know that the gays and lesbians were persecuted too. There is no end to the effects of the holocaust, decades later...
ReplyDeletegreat shot and the effect of the shadows makes it more interesting
ReplyDeleteThis is an evocative scene - the pink triangle meant oppression yet here in the dappled shade and sun, it seems as if it life shines on. Humans so often seem to have the capacity for evil. Here though, the artist affirms life as beautiful indeed...
ReplyDeleteVery powerful post.
ReplyDeleteThis is fascinating, thanks for posting it.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jim for educating me- I never realized that the Holocaust involved Gays and Lesbians being murdered also.
ReplyDeleteSo much hatred in this world. Very sad.
Remembering is the human thing to do...

ReplyDeleteGreat choice for theme, Jim!
ReplyDeletePerfect for theme day. Every year in San Francisco gay activists place a giant pink triangle on a local hill as part of the Gay Pride activities. Very moving.
ReplyDeleteI'm pleased to see this memorial for a group of people that too often are ignored by Holocaust historians. Thanks for the reminder!
ReplyDeleteinteresting...i've never heard of a memorial like this one..
