Watsons Bay, cannon

This historic cannon is located at South Head, in the eastern suburb of Watsons Bay. Fortifications at South Head were completed in 1854 but weren't armed with guns until later. This 9-inch cannon, which was previously located near the Hornby Lighthouse, was one of six brought to New South Wales from the Royal Gun Factory in England in 1872. This gun emplacement is located near Camp Cove Beach and points into Sydney Harbour.

  1. That's a well kept canon. We have some here, but they are very rusty.

  2. Thats a big gun but you can tell it was not from that position as it should be on rails to rotate it and there are none in the picture. Great photo

  3. A beautifully maintained piece of metal. Feisty but neatly packaged.

  8. Hiya Jim, Just wondering if there are any more cannons along the beach, Coogee beach? In 1969 we emigrated on the £10 ticket from England, although father was deported within 9 months, however this is another story. The reason I ask about the cannons is I had a picture of me and my brother taken by one of these cannons, I have lost the picture and this is my reason for asking. Kind Regards Freddie Ipswich Suffolk England.

    1. Hi, Frederick. Those cannons were at Coogee Beach until 1982 and they originally came from Fort Macquarie, which was where the Sydney Opera House now stands. They were moved to a suburban war memorial at Chifley.
