This commercial building is located along Military Road, in the lower north shore suburb of Mosman. William Henry Smith was a speculative builder who with his partner S. H. Cabban were responsible for many buildings in the Federation architectural style in the suburb. From the late 1890s, they erected a number of shops including "The Strand" which are now part of a conservation area.
Very nice street. Love the colors J.
ReplyDeleteThat pink is revolting, but the shop architecture still looks dashing. Thanks... now I must have a good look at Mosman.
ReplyDeleteFound this on Mellow Yellow Monday, Jim. Amazing architecture. Looks like an interesting street.

Good to see these buildings are being preserved.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful façade/balcony!
ReplyDeleteLove the architectural arched detail above the shops! Not sure about the dusky pink! It seems a little odd in contrast with the shop colours! But it is unique!
ReplyDeleteInteresting colours. It looks like it might be an area frequented by t0urists.
ReplyDeleteLooks like it should be a casino in a movie!! Boom & Gary of the Vermilon River, Canada.
ReplyDeleteYou had me at *shops*!!!!! Interesting architecture.
ReplyDeleteI do love the architecture and the details! Lovely street and colors! Great post for the day as always, Jim! Hope you have a good week!

The top and bottom of the building don't mesh but I think it's a great piece of architecture to preserve.
ReplyDeleteNice ruby find!
Great shots of the restored building.
ReplyDeleteLove the ornamental adornment on this structure. Very nicely captured too. Happy RT.
ReplyDeleteVery pretty!!!
ReplyDeleteVisiting from Ruby Tuesday, mind to come and and see my ruby entry? Your comment would be greatly appreciated!
This kind of architecture was also popular in my country, though not quite the same of course. Great shot, Jim!
ReplyDeleteThe Strand, huh? I wonder how many shopping centres, strip malls and arcades in Australia have that name?!?!?!
ReplyDeleteHi there - it always think it’s a good idea to look at the upper stories of shops from across the street – it’s surprising what you can find!
ReplyDeleteStewart M - Melbourne
nice front of the building.
ReplyDeleteRed Nomad OZ, it does seem to be a legendary name that has been used many times over.
ReplyDeleteLike the color of the building. it's beautiful..
ReplyDeleteVery original architecture. Do you know whether the original building was in pink and white, Jim?
ReplyDeleteFrancisca, I couldn't find any informationn on what the original colours might have been but they have tried to restore many of the buildings here to their original state so it's quite possible they were.
ReplyDeleteI know you and Hels are not keen on the pink, but in reality this group of shops is very good to look at.
ReplyDeleteThis is another blog with an incredible amount of information . I recently started to compile this kind of information to write a website about the subject and many of your suggestion will make their way to it. Thanks for the nice website!
