The Stonewall Hotel is located along Oxford Street, in the inner city suburb of Darlinghurst. The heritage listed building was designed by Mansfield Brothers and built in 1880 in the Victorian Free Classical style as a branch of the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney. It was altered in 1959, 1962 and 1978 by architects Laurie and Heath as it transformed into residences and then a bar and restaurant. It took its name from the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar and recreational tavern in the Greenwich Village neighbourhood of Lower Manhattan, New York City. It was the site of the Stonewall riots of 1969, which is widely considered to be the single most important event leading to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for gay and lesbian rights.

I like the architecture.
ReplyDeleteGreat , Loved the click.
ReplyDeleteBuilt originally in 1880 in the Victorian Free Classical style, this building was perfect for the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney. Was anything changed externally on the top two storeys, in the alternations you mentioned?
ReplyDeleteI've provided a link to the heritage listing. There is a mention of alterations to façade in 1962 but nothing specific.
DeleteI am so happy that they keep the old buildings, change them a bit yes if they have to, but retain their original essence. Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteGrand building.
ReplyDeleteGreat shot Jim . Keep commenting on my blog because I love your comments.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful restoration job and commemorates a sad and important chapter in our country's and the world's history.
ReplyDeleteYes, we also had our own riot in the early 70s when police tried to stop gays and lesbians holding a protest march.
