Matraville, Pioneer Memorial Park

Pioneer Memorial Park is part of the the Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park, in the eastern suburb of Matraville. It was created in 1976 as a memorial of early pioneers and prominent citizens of the colony of New South Wales. It features 746 surviving memorials that were transported here in 1901 from the early Sydney burial grounds, Town Hall Cemetery, beside St Andrew's Cathedral and the Sydney Burial Ground, also known as Sandhills or Devonshire Street Ground Cemetery.

Haymarket, fire station and railway station

The Rail Emergency Response Unit and the clock tower above Sydney Terminal Building at Central railway station, viewed from the footpath along Pitt Street near Eddy Avenue at Haymarket. The emergency signs are lit when the unit responds to emergency incidents involving the rail network such as derailments and automatic fire alarms within the underground rail network and nearby stations.

Botanic Gardens, Main Pond, flowers

The spring flowers are in full bloom in the flower beds near the Main Pond in the Royal Botanic Gardens. The flowers grow in interesting formations which I'm sure would look brilliant from high above. The old flower bed arrangement can be seen here.

Sydney Harbour Bridge, Vivid Sydney, Light the Bridge (Theme Day: Out of Focus)

"Light The Bridge" used energy-efficient LED lights to illuminate the Sydney Harbour Bridge for the Vivid Sydney Festival earlier in the year. This view was from the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House. I didn't post this shot at the time because it was out of focus, however, it's come in handy for this month's theme day post.

Erskineville, mural

This Oscar outer suburban or H Set Train is passing through the railway station in the inner city suburb of Erskineville. The mural was painted by the children of Erskineville Public School under the guidance of a local artist. It depicts their school which can partly be seen above, at street level.

Ryde, Holy Cross College Chapel

The Holy Cross College Chapel stands beside Holy Cross College along Victoria Road, in the north western suburb of Ryde. The main building built in 1896 in the Federation Free Classical architectural style. The chapel was built in 1959.

This sunset is viewed from Bonney Street Wharf, in the southern suburb of Sans Souci, looking out on Kogarah Bay.

Camperdown, University of Sydney, gates

These gates are located on the corner of City Road and Parramatta Road, beside the Gardener’s Lodge Cafe on the grounds of Victoria Park, in the inner city suburb of Camperdown. The Gardener’s Lodge was designed by James Barnet and built in 1885 in the Victorian Gothic Revival architectural style. The gates provided a grand main entrance to the University of Sydney and the lodge was the former home of the university's groundskeeper, who tended the sweeping lawns and gardens surrounding the campus.The sign advertises the cafe which has operated in the adjoining restored building since 2012. The Institute Cervantes building is located across City Road.

Hawthorne Canal provides a border between the inner west suburbs of Haberfield and Leichhardt. This new footbridge is viewed from Haberfield side of Hawthorne Canal Reserve.

Goldsmiths Buildings

Goldsmiths Buildings is a heritage listed building located along Goulburn Street. It was built in 1888 combining Victorian Italianate with Free Classical architectural syles. It has previously housed a Union Bank and ANZ Bank branch and is now used for retail and commercial space. It is in desperate need of a refurbishment.

Ryde, Holy Cross College

Holy Cross College is located along Victoria Road, in the north western suburb of Ryde. It is a Catholic school was established in the tradition of the Patrician Brothers.The heritage listed main building was designed by J.J. Sheerin and built in 1896 in the Federation Free Classical architectural style.

The Rocks, Suez Canal, sculpture

This is one of the life-size caricatures located in a narrow laneway known as Suez Canal, at The Rocks. Constructed in the late 19th century, this laneway runs between George Street and Harrington Street, with the name supposedly a pun on "sewers canal". The backlit sculptures glow at night and depict the people who frequented the area in the late 19th century who were involved in prostitution, slavery and opium.

Rozelle, theatre

The former Rozelle Theatre is located along Lilyfield Road in the inner west suburb of Rozelle. It was designed by architect Charles Bohringer and built in 1927, replacing a theatre that was on this site from 1912. It closed in 1960 and was converted into a reception centre. It now has shops on the ground floor and apartments on the floors above.

Ultimo, Mary Ann Park

Mary Ann Park is located along Mary Ann Street in the inner city suburb of Ultimo. The Sydney Technical College building, which is part of the Sydney Institute of TAFE (Technical and Further Education), is on the opposite site of the road. It was designed by William Kemp and built in 1891 in the Federation Romanesque architectural style.

Haymarket, mural

This mural has recently been painted on the wall of a ten storey hotel along Harbour Street, between Pier Street and Little Pier Street, in the inner city suburb of Haymarket. The artwork is of Jenny Munro, founder of the Redfern Aboriginal Tent Embassy, who has been fighting for Aboriginal housing rights for more than four decades and is being celebrated for her contribution to the community. It was created by street artist Matt Adnate and is part of the ANZ Street Art Project series, where four murals have transformed unused walls around the city.

Glebe, manse

"Reussdale" is the former presbyterian manse along Bridge Road, in the inner city suburb of Glebe. It was the house of minister of the Glebe Presbyterian church which stands alongside it. This heritage listed building was designed by Ferdinand Reuss Snr and built in 1870 in the Victorian Rustic Gothic architectural style.

Wynyard Street, Terraced

"Terraced" is a multi-site photographic installation that places large-scale images of terraced houses on other buildings around the city. The side wall of this convenience store on the corner of Wynyard Street and York Street features one of these displays. The artworks were photographed by artist James Voller has photographed in inner city suburbs such as Redfern, Darlinghurst and Surry Hills. It is part of the "Art and About Sydney" which features temporary art installations around the city

General Post Office

The western façade of the General Post Office (GPO) building, along George Street near the corner of Martin Place. The GPO was constructed in stages from 1866 to 1891 and was designed by colonial architect James Barnet in the Victorian Free Classical architectural style.

Marrickville, street art

This street art appears on the side of a terrace house on the corner of Smith Street and Fitzroy Street, in the inner west suburb of Marrickville. It has been used as a colourful way to cover graffiti and tags but as can partially be seen here, this hasn't prevented the taggers from moving onto the next available wall, on the left.

Rookwood, family vault

The John Paul Family Vault is a large monument in Rookwood Cemetery. The following information is from his obituary. Mr John Paul, who died in 1925 at his residence, Wolseley Road Point Piper, had reached the advanced age of 85. He started a business in Erskine Street in 1863 in the firm of Potts and Paul Ship Chandlers. Later, he founded the firm of Paul and Gray Ltd. in Sussex Street, and was the head of that firm until his retirement. He was associated with sea sports and sea life and was understood to be one of the oldest members of the Sydney branch of the League of Ancient Mariners. He leaves two sons, Dr. Norman Paul and Dr. Oscar Paul, both of whom practise in Macquarie Street.

This office and retail building is located along Clarence Street between between Market Street and Druitt Street. It's not a remarkeable building but the glass facade features an interesting geometric design.

Centennial Park, Federation Gateway

Federation Gateway, near Anzac Parade in the eastern suburb of Moore Park. it provides a grand opening to Federation Way from Moore Park to Centennial Park. This contemporary gate stands eight metres tall in timber, copper, bronze and cast iron and is inspired by the geometry of tree canopies. It was designed by Australian architect and urban designer, Alexander Tzannes and built in 2001 for the the Australian Centenary of Federation.

Chippendale, bank

The former English, Scottish and Australasian Bank is located along Broadway, in the inner city suburb of Chippendale. It was designed by Robertson and Marks and built in 1930 in the Inter-War Free Classical architectural style. When I photographed this building it was a bar, bistro and nightclub. It is now known as Jesuit House, a residence for graduates from Jesuit schools and serves as a volunteer study, socialising and planning centre and outreach to the poor.

Arncliffe, tunnel mural

This is part of a mural on the wall of a new pedestrian tunnel which opened recently, under the railway line in the southern suburb of Arncliffe. Students at the nearby Al Zahra College provided drawings centred on the school's vision and purpose, which the artist used to create this mural.

Redfern, Cathedral of the Annunciation Of Our Lady Theotokos

The Cathedral of the Annunciation Of Our Lady Theotokos is a Greek Orthodox Church on Cleveland Street, in the inner city suburb of Redfern. This heritage listed sandstone church was formerly St Paul's Anglican Church, designed by Edmund Blacket and built in 1848 in in the Colonial Decorated Gothic architectural style.

Surry Hills, warehouse (Theme Day: Abandoned)

The Griffith's Teas Building is an abandoned warehouse building in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills. This heritage listed former warehouse is a triangular building along Wentworth Avenue and Commonwealth Street, meeting at Goulburn Street. It was designed by Kent, Budden and Greenwell and built in 1915 in the Federation architectural style for Griffith's Bros Pty Ltd, who were Tea, Coffee and Cocoa Merchants. It was owned by property moguls who had a portfolio of properties around Sydney which they planned to restore but lay abandoned or derelict for many years. They have set up a charitable foundation which has recently sold this building for redevelopment as apartments.

The Court House Hotel is located on the corner of Australia Street and Lennox Street, in the inner city suburb of Newtown. This heritage listed pub was originally built in 1860 with additions made in 1890 in the Victorian architectural style.

Sydney Central Local Courthouse

Sydney Central Local Courthouse is located along Liverpool Street. This heritage listed building was designed by James Barnet and Walter Liberty Vernon and built in 1892 in the Federation Free Classical architectural style. It has previously been known as Central Police Courts, Court of Petty Sessions and Central Criminal and Local Court.

Haymarket, In Between Two Worlds

"In Between Two Worlds" is an art installation located in Chinatown at Haymarket. This artwork, created by artist Jason Wing, explores themes of heaven and earth featuring painted wall murals, etched granite floor murals and 30 suspended illuminated spirit figures. This view is from Little Hay Street, looking down Kimber Lane towards Market City.

Hyde Park, Oddfellows Memorial

The Oddfellows Memorial is located in the south-west corner of Hyde Park North, on the corner of Elizabeth and Park Streets. The foundation was erected in memory of the members of the Oddfellows Society who enlisted in World War 1. The Oddfellows movement began in 18th century Britain as a social club, but was reorganised in 1810 into friendly societies, insurance and lending organisations. This memorial drinking fountain consisting of a pink granite and sandstone monolith obelisk set on a stepped sandstone base was created in 1921 by Samuel Lipson.

Hyde Park, John Baptist Fountain

The John Baptist Fountain near Sandringham Gardens in Hyde Park along Park Street. It was originally located at the Baptist Gardens, which is now Redfern Park and contains another Baptist Fountain in Redfern. The site featured market gardens, a nursery and pleasure gardens which attracted visitors in the days before public parks. This fountain was installed there in the 1860s and later donated to the trustees of Hyde Park in 1888. It was removed during construction of the underground railway in 1920 but restored and returned in 2012 as a working fountain. I've captured it here on a day when it wasn't running.

Sydney Olympic Park, Sydney Showground, Main Arena

These light towers are at the Main Arena of Sydney Showground, in the western suburb of Homebush Bay. This stadium, which was used during the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000, is now the showring for the Royal Agricultural Society during the annual Royal Easter Show. It's been sixteen years since the Sydney Olympic Games this month.

Sydney Olympic Park, Sports Centre

The Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre, formerly the State Sports Centre, is located at Sydney Olympic Park, in the western Sydney suburb of Homebush Bay. It was known as the Basketball Centre during the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics and was the home to the West Sydney Razorbacks, an Australian professional basketball team and the Sydney Swifts, an Australian netball team. The Razorbacks disbanded and the Swifts merged with another team, so these billboards are heritage items now. Almost difficult to believe that it's as already been sixteen years this month since the Olympics were in Sydney.

Royal Botanic Gardens, barrangal dyara (skin and bones)

This view of the Royal Botanic Gardens includes "barrangal dyara" (skin and bones), a sculptural installation by artist Jonathan Jones. The project recalls the 19th century Garden Palace building, which stood here before it was devastatingly burnt to the ground, along with countless Aboriginal objects that had been collected. It is a response to the immense loss felt throughout Australia due to the destruction of these culturally significant items. The thousands of bleached white shields echo the masses of rubble, the only remnants of the Garden Palace after the fire.

Hyde Park, Archibald Fountain

The Archibald Fountain is an art deco style fountain in Hyde Park, near College Street, designed by French artist Francois Sicard and unveiled on 14 March 1932. The fountain is named after J.F. Archibald, owner and editor of The Bulletin, a newspaper which later became a magazine that encouraged writers to write about Australia. He bequeathed funds to build it to commemorate the association of Australia and France in World War I. The fountain features mythological characters of ancient Greece. The central pedestal features a bronze sculpture of Apollo with the fan-like shape of water formed by jets rising behind it, representing the rising sun. There are three granite plinths radiating from the central pedestal featuring the following bronze sculptures: Artemis, the goddess of the wilderness, the hunt, wild animals and fertility depicted here with a bow, a deer and hunting dogs. Jason with the Golden Fleece and the good things of the earth. Theseus slaying the Minotaur which represents the sacrifice for the good of humanity. The large basin is decorated with six tortoises which throw jets of water.
Today marks the ten year anniversary of the first photo I posted on this blog which was also a photo of this fountain which can be seen here. To celebrate, I returned yesterday for another look at the fountain; this time with St Mary's Cathedral as a backdrop.

Martin Place, mural

This mural has recently been painted on the wall of the MLC Centre, near one of the Martin Place entrances. The artwork is of ‘Fighting’ Father Dave Smith, a professional boxer, black belt and parish priest who uses boxing to help troubled youth in Sydney. It was created by artist Luke Cornish, also known as E.L.K, who has been boxing with Father Smith and has developed a strong bond with him. It is part of the ANZ Street Art Project series, where four murals have transformed unused walls around the city.

Ashfield, St John the Baptist Anglican Church, war memorial

This war memorial stands on the grounds of St John the Baptist Anglican Church along Alt Street, in the inner west suburb of Ashfield. The church was built in 1843 with a bell tower and entrance added in 1901. The cenotaph dedication reads: In everlasting tribute to those parishioners of St. John's Church of England Ashfield who served in the fighting forces of Australia during the 2nd World War 1939 - 1945.

Sydney Tower

This view of Sydney Tower, rising above the Sheraton Hotel and the J.P. Morgan office building, is from Hyde Park North. Sydney Tower was completed in 1981 and is still Sydney's tallest structure standing at 309 metres tall. The observation deck and revolving restaurant at the top stand above Westfield Sydney shopping centre, previously known as Centrepoint.
