St George's Hall is on King Street, in the inner city suburb of Newtown. This heritage Victorian Italianate building was built in 1887 with the front of the building containing shops and offices, while the back consisting of the main hall and several smaller meeting rooms. It is now part of the Newtown High School of the Performing Arts.

What a great place to attend classes!
ReplyDeleteIt's a great little suburb, though a bit "kookie". Once needs to have a broad appreciation of human "beauty" to wander its streets.
ReplyDeleteI hope he students appreciate this handsome building.
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful and charming! Looks quite appropriate for a performing arts school too.
ReplyDeleteI would love to attend classes in that very classic building besides there's a cafe at the ground floor.

Magnificent is certainly the appropriate term for the architecture of the building. I must say I never taught in any building this grand. :)

Gorgeous architecture. The pale blue sky is a lovely backdrop.
ReplyDeleteThis is magnificent, and a gorgeous blue sky! :)
ReplyDeleteLike the Newtown post office, St Georges Hall is way too fussy for my taste. In fact all of King Street is. But 1875-95 was a great period of commissioning boom-time architecture, wasn't it? Australians must have thought they were the luckiest, cleverest people on earth. Which the two International Exhibitions in 1879 and 1880 only confirmed!
ReplyDeleteHels, I have read that the late 1800s were a boom time for Australia economically and some argue the most prosperous time in our history. So I guess that matches the boom in architecture at that time.
