The Strand Arcade is a historic shopping arcade, built in the Victorian architectural style, that runs between George Street and Pitt Street. The post Christmas sales started in the city on Boxing Day. The Christmas decorations this year were hung at various heights over three levels.
That Christmas hanging down decoration thingie is cool! Hope no one got hurt on boxing day!
ReplyDeleteHi Jim. Happy New Year! I am catching up on reading my favorite blogs after the Christmas Holiday -- your photos of the night lights were so wonderful -- I could look at them for hours. So beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
That's funny Leif. I sometimes forget that some of our traditions or aspects of our culture aren't the same throughout the whole world.
ReplyDeleteHave a good New Year in 2010!
ReplyDeleteI wandered into the Strand to see what I could see, but found it a bit overwhelming. I did not, however, go upstairs and get this more expansive perspective.
ReplyDeleteIt is a lovely arcade. Does it look anything like the original?
Great arcade! And the decoration is very impressive too!
ReplyDeleteJulie, they've done a better job of preserving the Strand Arcade than they have with the Queen Victoria Building recently. Let's hope it doesn't suffer the same the same fate with radical 'renovations', now that it has the same the owners.
ReplyDeleteI love the Strand Arcade but have never attempted to photograph it ... nice job.
ReplyDeleteWho are the new owners - Ipoh? They own the Grace Hotel, I think. That looks good too.
ReplyDeleteAll the above are better than a Four Seasons, a Novotel or a Hilton any old day.
There is another grand hotel down the Central end of Pitt (I think) which reminds me of a Queenslander. Have you anything of that one?
Yes, Ipoh owns the Strand Arcade too. I wonder if they were involved in the restoration of The Grace Hotel because that does look good.
ReplyDeleteIpoh also own The Galeries Victoria shopping centre under the Citibank building and I fear they've used a lot of the contemporary stylings of that at the QVB.
Cool shot!
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful, and so many interesting and nice details.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year, from me up in the north!:-)
wow that is beautiful...
ReplyDeleteIf there are any bookshops inside, you could leave me there for a while.
ReplyDeleteMay you all have a beautiful start of the new year.
What a beautiful, old arcade. There is a similar arcade in Cleveland, Ohio, which I have visited. I really like the Christmas decorations in your photo.
ReplyDeleteImpressive!
ReplyDeleteThat's one of my favourite places. :-)
ReplyDeleteIs the jade chariot still there?
Lovely Victoriana, when I was in Sydney last, was disappointed at the "renovations" of the QVB - all the old shop facades gone.
ReplyDeleteHave a very happy new year and best wishes.
Cheers.
