Tempe, Cooks River

These clouds above Tempe Recreation Reserve are reflected in Cooks River, which creates a natural border between the inner west suburb of Tempe and the southern suburb of Wolli Creek.

Bondi Junction, art

 This artwork is on display in Westfield shopping centre, in the eastern suburb of Bondi Junction. This "G'Day" sign is part of an exhibition by artist CJ Hendry called "Straya", which is Australian slang for “Australia”. The exhibition celebrates Australian slang using custom street signs with slanguage and sayings installed in locations around Australia. Others signs installed in cities, towns and the outback include: "Aussie", "Old Mate", "Bewdy", "Noice", "Avago", "Hard Yakka", "Brekky", "Hoo Roo", "This Arvo", "You Beaut", "Yeah Nah", "Easy As", "Woop Woop", "Ken Oath", "Cashed Up Bogan" and  "Chuck a U-ey".

Arncliffe, houses

"Gladstone and Wentworth" are  semi detached terrace houses located along Forest Road, in the southern suburb of Arncliffe. These heritage listed houses were built in 1886 in the Victorian architectural style. They have had some restoration work completed recently which includes a new colour scheme. A former colour scheme can be seen here.

McMahons Point, houses

This pair of two storey semi detached houses are located on the corner of Union Street and Thomas Street, in the north shore suburb of McMahons Point. This heritage listed building is designed in the Federation Filigree style with Art Nouveau influences and built in the first decade of the twentieth century.

Zetland, mural

This mural is on the side of the Zetland Hotel, located on the corner of Bourke Street and Elizabeth Street in the inner city suburb of Zetland. It depicts a hole in the wall with a view of the bar and patrons inside.

Stanmore, St Michael the Archangel Catholic Church

 St Michael the Archangel Catholic Church is located along Clarendon Road, in the inner west suburb of Stanmore. It was built in 1916 in the Federation style.

Sydney Olympic Park, Brickworks

This heritage building is located along Marjorie Jackson Parkway, in the western suburb of Sydney Olympic Park. This is one of the remaining buildings located at the former State Brickworks which operated on this site from 1911 until 1988. The brickpit became a pond with the elevated Brickpit Ring Walkway above.

Sydney Olympic Park, Ken Rosewall Arena

The Tennis Centre is located along Rod Laver Avenue, in the western suburb of Sydney Olympic Park. The main stadium was recently renamed Ken Rosewall Arena in honour of Australian tennis player Ken Rosewall. It was constructed for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and redeveloped in 2019 to become a multi-purpose indoor arena. The avenue is named after another tennis legend Rod Laver.

Sydney Olympic Park, Sports Halls

 A view of one of the Sports Halls from the corner of Olympic Boulevarde and New England Avenue, in the western suburb of Sydney Olympic Park. The complex was built for 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and is used to host events in Volleyball, Table Tennis, Badminton, Handball and Futsal or Indoor Soccer. It is also a Sydney Showground venue for the annual Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Sydney Olympic Park, Southee Complex

  The Southee Complex is located on the corner of Showground Road and Grand Parade, in the western suburb of Sydney Olympic Park. The complex houses Exhibition Halls 5 & 6 of the Sydney Showgrounds, a purpose built venue for the annual Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Eveleigh, artwork

This temporary artwork was located on the hoardings of Axle, a new office and retail development on the corner of Locomotive Street and Mitchell Way, in the inner city suburb of Eveleigh. 'Chaorder' was created by Beth Radford as part of a display of emerging artists selected to feature in the 'REFLECTION' series at  South Eveleigh. This artwork explores patterns, progression, symmetry and sequence with its counterpart chaos, unpredictability, and the incalculable interactions found in the natural world. The hoardings have now been removed to reveal cafes, restaurants and shops.

This religious sculpture at Santa Sabina College stands in front of Holyrood, a heritage listed building on the corner of The Boulevarde and Jersey Road, in the inner west suburb of Strathfield.

North Strathfield, railway station

 

North Strathfield railway station was built in 1918 and is located in the western suburb of North Strathfield. It is the first station on the Main Northern line after it branches from the Main Suburban line at Strathfield and is served by Sydney Trains T9 Northern Line services. The concourse and stairs were upgraded in recent years when the lifts were installed.

Lakemba, railway station

Looking across the platforms of Lakemba railway station, in the south western suburb of Lakemba. The station opened in 1909 when line from Sydenham to Belmore was extended to Bankstown. Today the station is served by Sydney Trains T3 Bankstown line services. The original wooden ticket office along the concourse was heavily damaged by fire and replaced by this modern metal and glass structure in 2001.

 Canterbury railway station, in the inner west suburb of Canterbury. The station opened in 1895 with a line from Sydenham to Belmore. Today the station is served by Sydney Trains T3 Bankstown line services.

Waterloo, mural

This mural is on the side of a commercial building on the corner of Chapel Lane and Botany Road, in the inner city suburb of Waterloo. The Kid Laroi is an Australian musician who grew up in this area and has had international success with his music. This mural was created in 2020 by visual artist Scott Marsh.

Mascot, Beckenham Uniting Church

The former Beckenham Uniting Church is located on the corner of Botany Road and Wentworth Avenue, in the eastern suburb of Mascot. The heritage listed church was designed by ecclesiastical architect Arthur Layton-Clark in an Interwar Gothic style and built in 1933 as the Beckenham Memorial Congregational Church, The property was resumed by the State Government of New South Wales in 2015 and the adjacent church hall was demolished for road widening. A small landscaped area called Dr Darragh Reserve was created between the road and the church, which will be repurposed now.

Walsh Bay, sculptures

 These sculptures are located at Walsh Bay wharves, between Dawes Point and Millers Point. They are part of the 2021 Walsh Bay Sculpture Walk, run by ArtPark Australia, which is exhibiting contemporary landmark sculpture in public spaces around Australia.

Dawes Point, warehouse, staircase

Pier 3 is located along Hickson Road on Walsh Bay, in the inner city suburb of Dawes Point. It was once part of Sydney's port facilities and this external staircase is attached to the redeveloped warehouse building. The Walsh Bay wharves have been converted into theatres, offices, hotels, apartments, restaurants, cafes and shops.

Dawes Point, Pier One

Pier One is located along Hickson Road overlooking Walsh Bay, in the inner city suburb of Dawes Point. It was once part of Sydney's port facilities and this bridge linked the warehouse building to the ships that moored here. It is now used as a balcony for the Pier One Sydney Harbour Hotel in the redeveloped warehouse building. The little igloo-like structure has been installed to allow guests to enjoy the sights of Sydney Harbour during in winter.

Banksia, St Savvas of Kalymnos Orthodox Church

 St Savvas of Kalymnos Orthodox Church is located along the Princes Highway, in the southern suburb of Banksia. This church building was formerly used by the Banksia Free Church. It became an Orthodox Church in 2016 and features a reproduction of an icon of the saint on the windows.

Rose Bay, wharf

This wharf and boat ramp are at Lyne Park, in the eastern suburb of Rose Bay. A yacht has just arrived after sailing on Sydney Harbour and is heading to the nearby Woolhara Yacht Club.

Monterey, signs

These signs are located in Cook Park overlooking Lady Robinsons Beach and Botany Bay, on the border of the southern suburbs of Monterey and Brighton-Le-Sands. The variable message sign board on the trailer is usually used for traffic management but now reminds people to "Help Stop The Spread. Keep Your Distance." during the pandemic. The Cook Park sign has recently been updated to feature the Bayside Council local government area logo and colours. Small signs advise that the "Beach Access Closed Due To Erosion" here. The road signs along The Grande Parade point north to the Airport and the city of Sydney and south to Cronulla.

Kurnell, tri-flag pole

 
This giant tri-flag pole is located at Captain Cook's Landing Place in the Kamay Botany Bay National Park, in the southern suburb of Kurnell. The flags flown here are the Flag of Australia, the Australian Aboriginal Flag, and the State Flag of New South Wales.

Kurnell, Captain Cook's Landing Place

This obelisk marks Captain Cook's Landing Place in the Kamay Botany Bay National Park, in the southern suburb of Kurnell. Captain James Cook was an English explorer, navigator and cartographer whose expedition was the first recorded European one to navigate and map the eastern coastline of Australia. On the 29th of April 1770, his crew arrived in Botany Bay on the Endeavour and made their first landing on Australian soil. This monument was dedicated in 1870 to commemorate the centenary.

Coogee, beach sign

Looking across Coogee Beach to Coogee Bay and the Pacific Ocean, in the eastern suburb of Coogee. The sign declares that the beach is closed to swimmers due to dangerous conditions. Two lifeguard surfboards sit on either side, in case of emergency. It's officially winter now so you're not going to see many swimmers at the beach anyway.

Coogee, tidal pool

Looking down at the Ross Jones Memorial Pool, next to the Surf Life Saving Club, from the upper promenade at Coogee Beach, in the eastern suburb of Coogee. Those standing in the tidal pool and one about to walk down the stairs are rugby league footballers. The State of Origin series is an annual best-of-three rugby league series between two Australian state representative sides, the New South Wales Blues and the Queensland Maroons. This photo was taken on Monday when these players from the NSW Blues were revealed for the upcoming series. Their two watchful minders keep an eye on the rough waves washing in.

Mascot, Sydney Airport (Theme Day: When I Can Travel Again)

The Sydney International Airport Departure Plaza, in the eastern suburb of Mascot. This area is used to drop passengers off at the Departures level of the T1 International Terminal. Normally, this area would be buzzing with cars, taxis and buses throughout the day but at the moment there are many times when it is completely deserted. Travellers are waiting to return here to travel overseas again.

Sans Souci, war memorial

 This war memorial is located in Pemberton Reserve, in the southern suburb of Sans Souci. The marble statue of an Australian soldier was originally dedicated on 24 August 1919 atop an elaborate monument at the Wolli Creek Tram Depot in Tempe. In 1970, it was given to the Kyeemagh RSL Club and painted to cover damage inflicted by vandals. In 2002, the paint was removed to reveal its original appearance and the statue was restored. It was mounted on the sandstone pedestal which features a decorative plaque with a laurel wreath surrounding an eternal flame and the inscribed words 'Lest We Forget, For the Fallen'. Following the closure of the club, the Ramsgate RSL Club became its custodian and in 2021 relocated it to the adjoining park.

The Ocean Safety and Lifesaving Headquarters is located at Wanda Beach, in the southern suburb of Cronulla.

Kurnell, Alpha House

 'Alpha House' is located along Cape Solander Drive, in the southern suburb of Kurnell. The first Alpha House was built in 1815, when seven hundred acres were acquired by James Birnie to establish 'Alpha Farm'. John Connell built a new stone cottage on the foundations in 1828, retaining the underground cool rooms. By the 1890s it was abandoned and in 1902 this heritage listed timber guesthouse was built on the site.

Kurnell, sculpture

  Looking across Botany Bay to Port Botany and La Perouse from the southern suburb of Kurnell.  This large bronze sculpture on the shore is 'The Eyes of the Land and the Sea', designed by Alison Page and Nik Lachacjzak. It is one of the three sculptures installed in 2020 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the encounter between Aboriginal Australians and the crew of the HMB Endeavour, commanded by James Cook. It is described as an ‘abstraction of the ribs of the HMB Endeavour and the bones of the Gweagal totem the whale’.

 Waverley Cemetery overlooks the Pacific Ocean, in the eastern suburb of Bronte. The first interment at this heritage listed cemetery took place in 1877.

Bronte Baths are located at the southern end of Bronte Beach, in the eastern suburb of Bronte. We're nearly at the end of Autumn and the temperatures have cooled so you're not seeing many swimmers now.
